We heart untitled J.J. Abrams film

During the coming attractions before the film Transformers, there was a teaser of new J.J. Abrams film. The teaser did not give a name only that it was a J.J. Abrams film, the release date is 1-18-08, and it is a post apocolyptic movie of some sort taking place in NYC.

Here are a few references to the film:
Wikipedia - Cloverfield
IMDB - Untitled J.J. Abrams

and a few websites that seem to be related to the film:

We heart Bumbershot

Anyone going to Bumbershoot this year? Sunday lineup is starting to look good to me with Stella (comedy), BRMC, Kings of Leon, Art Brut, Apples in Stereo, and Seaweed?!? I lost one of my sneakers (Vans) at the at a Seaweed concert during the 1995 Bumbershoot festival (luckily my friend Josh had an extra pair of shoes in his truck, otherwise my toes would have gotten stomped on during The Ramones)... so if you go see Seaweed be sure to tie your shoes if you mosh!

We heart Ivars

Ivars Salmon House is definitily has one of my favorite happy hours in the city. Not only are the prices and food decent, there is also deck seating at one of the best outdoor seating venues in the city.

We heart 4th of July

Instead of trying to drive somewhere this holiday and be stuck in traffic for hours, we elected to stay home and walk down to Lake Union where we were able to watch the WaMu firework display. We were able to find a very small public park where we were able to watch the fireworks with only a handful of other people around.

We heart Nintendo DS

Nerd Alert!

Bridget bought be a Nintendo DS for my birthday about a month ago. However, I have been busy and only started playing the games today. My friend Jesse loaded a bunch of games on the system for me, so I am set for a while. Bridget also has a DS. She uses it to play Pokemon for work. I think she bought one for me so she wouldn't be a nerd by herself.
Nintendogs anyone?

We heart Portland

We were able to spend Saturday and Sunday in Portland this past weekend. The weather was absolutely gorgeous!

This time we met with several friends (and friends of friends) who came from Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, and L.A. and basically took over the back patio of a bar/restaurant in NW Portland called the New Old Lompoc (they get together and do this once a year, usually in San Francisco). The idea being they scout out a location and decide to stay there from the time the venue opens in the afternoon at 11 am, until it closes at 2am. Bridget and I did not stay the entire time, but there were several troopers who did.

We stayed at the Jupiter, which I would not recommend on a hot summer night (our room was stuffy and had poor air conditioning), however the place itself is fun. The property is a bar/restaurant/hotel/venue. It is much like a McMenamins property, but for hipsters.

I always have a great time going to all the quirky restaurants and shops in Portland. I can’t wait to go down again later this month for the Decemberists.

We heart Transformers

My Transformers review:
Starts out good but soon transforms into CRAP!!!

Seriously, it is your typical summer movie courtesy of Spielberg and Michael Bay. Mindless entertainment with lots of cool special effects. Bumble Bee is a Camero. What?!? I liked Transformers much better than War Of The Worlds (recent Spielberg) but slightly less than The Island (recent Michael Bay).

Some of my favorite lines only because they use the original Optimus Prime voice:

Sam: How Did you guys learn to talk?
Optimus Prime: From The World Wide Web

Sam: How Did you guys find me?
Optimus Prime: Ebay

We heart The White Stripes

On Sunday we headed up north to watch The White Stripes at Deer Lake Park in Burnaby, B.C. (outskirts of Vancouver). On the way we stopped in Bellingham and had lunch at the newly re-opened Casa Que Pasa (the Rancho’s taste nearly as good as I remember) with Nik, Justin, and Jory.

The border to get across to Canada was long because of all sorts of construction going on. The day started out to be sunny, but ended up pouring rain by mid afternoon (we bought some ponchos at Fred Meyer) in case we got rained on at the White Stripes.

It poured rain up until about a half and hour before the White Stripes, so the ground was completely soaked, and soggy… and rain clouds were still looming overhead… not completely the sunny day concert we had envisioned

The White Stripes were great. I only wished they had played a few more songs of their new album. I think the White Stripes are more appropriate to see in a theater than a festival show. We are going to see them play again at the Paramount in September, which should be amazing.

On a side note, I have never bought an album on so many formats as I have Icky Thump, I have it on vinyl, CD, and USB (2 collectable versions) and have 4 different 7” versions of the single Icky Thump itself. I guess I go a little crazy with The White Stripes merch. Luckily I have a wife who has a shoe and purse habit, so she understands my addiction.

We heart Steve Buscemi

Steve Buscemi was in town to promote his film, Interview, during SIFF. We were at a reception on Capitol Hill for the SIFF gala event for The Evening and saw Steve Buscemi mingling around. My sister Bridget and her friend Lisa saw Steve and they ended up talking to him for about 20 minutes. During this time they introduced me and I was able to shake his hand and Bridget (wife) gave him her crappy pen. I am not that celebrity crazy, but since Steve is in so many movies I enjoy, it was an honor just to shake his hand. That is when I texted many of my friends to let them know. However, at that point I did not realize the night had only just begun.

When it was time for Steve to leave, he told my sister and her friend that if there was anything interesting to do in that he wanted to hang out and told him to call him at the W (where he was staying).

So about a half an hour later we drove down to the W, half thinking that Steve might change his mind, but sure enough the Front Desk person called up his room and Steve said he was expecting the call. Within minutes he was in the lobby. The hard part of the night was trying to figure out a good place to suggest take him (briefly my mind raced to figure out which bar nearby most resembled Tree’s Lounge). We suggested we go to Capitol Hill or to the Alabi Room/Triple Door, but he wanted something very close to the hotel. We ended up going to Sazerac (right across the street) around 11:00 for a round of drinks. It was last call, so the place was empty – but the 5 of us grabbed a booth and each ordered a drink. Steve ordered a single malt Macallan 12 yr.

After Sazerac, we all went to the W – which thankfully we were able to find another booth and order another round of drinks before last call. We stayed at the W until they turned on the lights and kicked us out. Afterwards, he even came outside with us for a bit and walked my sister and her friend to their car.

Steve was the nicest person. He listened to our dumb conversations (cats, parents, etc) offered to buy us drinks, and hugged us all as we left for the night. He was also very funny (quick with the sarcasm) and handsome in person (more than you would expect).

We watched his film the next day, and it was funny how there were some parallels to the night we spent with Steve and the plot of the movie. In the movie Steve’s character is hired to interview a tabloid famous movie star (played by Sienna Miller) at a restaurant, but he was unprepared (because he normally covers politics). In the film there were also people in the restaurant, who would notice the Sienna Millers character and approach her and ask for her autograph or talk about how much they loved her in every movie. That is what it was like hanging out with Steve. Some of our questions about his film work were funny. At one point Steve was talking about Reservoir Dogs and my sister asked, “oh you were in Reservoir Dogs?” or when he started talking about Sopranos, I had to tell him not to give anything away because I has only watched up to Season 3. Also Bridget (wife) was describing to Steve a film that we saw that week during SIFF, Paris, je t'aime. She had forgotten he was in it, until he responded with a confused look, “Did you know I was in that?”. Also similar with Interview were the people throughout the night that would approach him throughout the night asking for autographs or singing his praises.

Anyway, it was a fun experience.

Mr. Tickets

Recently Phuong Cat Le from the Seattle PI asked me a few questions about how to get tickets for the article, Bummed you didn't get tickets? Try these tricks.

I shared with him a bunch of info, but here what was printed:

"Join the band... Well, not exactly. But signing up on the e-mail list of your favorite bands can help. Brian O'Neill wasn't able to get tickets to see the Strokes at the Crocodile last year, but on the day of the show he got a call from the Strokes fan club offering to put him on the guest list."

Thanks to my friend Nate Lepely (who lives in Japan) for the find...

Sasquatch 2007

Sasquatch was both fun and miserable. We left before noon on Saturday morning to catch Neko Case at 3:30, but there was a car accident on the pass that caused some major delays and ended up an hour and a half behind schedule. When we finally arrived, we quickly set up our tent and walked the mile or two to the Gorge entrance. We had already missed both Neko Case and Visqueen (déjà vu’), and arrived just in time to see a half a song of Ghostland Observatory at the Wookie Stage before they had an unfortunate power outage. We decided to stake our claim on the grass at the mainstage while Citizen Cope was playing. I trekked off to go see Grizzly Bear while Bridget held the fort during The Long Winters. We then ate some food and listened to some of Beastie Boys “instrumental” at the Wookie Stage. We then headed back down to the mainstage during Manu Chao while some hippies rolled around in the grass in front of us promting us to find a better spot. We stayed put during Arcade Fire which were absolutely amazing and stayed for most of Bjork (we were getting cold). Bjork was also spectacular.

On Sunday we woke up early and spend some of the morning driving around, which was nice. It took us about an hour to get through the entrance line for Sunday Sasquatch, which is something that really annoyed me. When we arrived we sat on the grass and watched Minus the Bear and Helio Sequence at the Yeti Stage. Part of that time was also spent sleeping and getting a little sun burnt… I went to see was The Polyphonic Spree at the Mainstage while Bridget went to see Tokyo Police Club at the Wookie Stage. However, the wind started to pick up during The Polyphonic Spree and the stage lights were blowing around like crazy. I started to worry about the bands safety. The event managers ended up shutting down the Polyphonic Spree down for safety reasons. They said the needed to let “nature take its course”. Bridget made the hilarious comment that it wouldn’t matter so much if the lights took out a couple members of the members of Polyphonic Spree because they would still be able to play (Note: the band consists of 24 members). I added that it wouldn't be hard for them to recruit some new members anyway (Note: they give off the impression of being a religious cult). I ran up to catch most of Tokyo Police Club as well as half of the Mainstage audience. Tokyo Police Club were good, but there ego must have grown huge because the crowd ballooned up (more than the Beastie Boys "instrumental" show the night before) once the Mainstage closed. I imagine Smoosh had a similar experience at their show.

The next several hours were spent undercover waiting to figure out if the main stage would reopen. From our location we were able to hear some of the Black Angels, which sounded more appropriate in the windy chaotic setting that it if they had played while sunny and cheery. Spoon finally went on about 2 hours late. I watched a little bit of the show (Bridget still undercover) but it was so cold and windy that we decided there was no point in being miserable and decided to drive home and miss Dandy Warhols (although they were playing while we were leaving and I did hear two of my favorite songs), Interpol, and Beastie Boys. I wonder how the show ever ended up.

It is two years in a row that we had to take off earlier than planned because of the miserable weather.

It seemed like Sasquatch was much more crowed than previous years and filled with way more annoying people. There were some improvements. The Wookie Stage was a much better stage this year and able to hold a larger capacity. The food and drinks were as pricey as always, but there did not seem to be any problems getting a cold beer or soda. It is probably the first year I ever bought a beer at the Gorge because there were no lines, the beer was cold, and you can actually bring the beer with you when walking around.

May 17th: Stuff Going On

Lots of great stuff going on here in Seattle this week. Here’s a look at some of the places I will try to be...
---------------------------
Event: Miranda July @ Neumos FREE
Thursday, May 17th

Miranda July will be doing a reading at Neumos to promote her new book, No One Belongs Here More Than You.

If you have a few minutes, check out the promo site for the book.

This event is a Reading and Dance Party and also features Sarah Rudinoff, Becky Stark (of Lavender Diamond), “Awesome” and DJ Sam Rousso Sound System.

This event is FREE!
---------------------------
Film: Once
Friday May 18th

On Friday we will be attending a special SIFF Screening of the film ONCE. I have been looking forward to seeing this movie.
---------------------------
Music: Joy Wants Eternity
Thursday, March 17th @ Sunset Tavern
Saturday, March 19th @ Atlas Clothing

I heard the band Joy Wants Eternity playing a live on KEXP last week, and wanted to buy their CD immediately, however the CD had not come out yet.

Good news. They are playing a couple of CD Release shows this week.

They are playing Thursday, March 17th at Sunset Tavern and Saturday, March 19th at Atlas Clothing (I didn’t realize they had shows here!)

Highly suggested if you like bands like Explosions in The Sky and Mogwai. Look for them soon in the "Shoegazy Instumental Space-rock" section of your local record store.
---------------------------
Event: U-District Street Fair
Saturday, May 19th and Sunday May 20th

The U-District Street Fair is this weekend. I have never been, but seeing that it takes place only 2 block from my house – I am definitely have to check it out. I don’t think we will move our car this weekend because parking is going to be crazy. I am not too excited about any of the performances, just looking forward to some good ole people watching and some foodies!
---------------------------
Music: Ben Gibbard & David Bazan @ The Showbox
Sunday, May 20th and Monday May 21st

I am not a huge fan of singer/songwriter shows at the Showbox, but I am excited to see this show. I have a live recording somewhere of Ben Gibbard playing the 5th Floor Coffee house in Bellingham in 2001. I remember he played a Backstreet Boys cover.

We heart babies

My sister Laurie had her baby on Friday.

Apollo (middle name to be finalized) was born at 4:46 PM on May 11th. He weighed in at 8 lbs. and is 20.6 inches long.

First baby in the family. My parents are happy grandparents. I really couldn't top this Mothers Day present. Our annual "Mother Day Sizzler Extravaganza Brunch" was put on hold for this year. Maybe next year.

Speaking of babies, everyone and their sister is pregnant or having babies lately!

Sisters and Stuff

My sister Bridget came home this week after a long visit to Thailand and Vietnam. She must have been gone for a long time (about 8 months). It was great to finally see her.

She was initially going to stay in Vietnam for a few more months but she decided to come early. My parents have missed her like crazy... when she decided to come home early she wanted to surprise them. She showed up at the house last weekend, sat on the couch and waited for them to come home.

My parents just about had a heart attack when they saw Bridget. They thought they had seen a ghost or were going crazy or something.

Bridget's husband Josh will be coming back shortly as well (as soon as he can book a flight back to Seattle). Check out their travel blog on MySpace (Expedition Life).

El Monterey

Below are a few pics of our building. We live on the second floor:

We moved to our new place on Saturday. It took many truckloads and carloads as well as some much appreciated help from family and Scot. Tip for moving, rent a U-Haul. It is well worth it.

Brian personally spent 17 hours moving (although we did take an hour break to eat pizza at Northlake Tavern)! Eek.

The last couple of car loads were really tough because that is where all the random stuff is moved. Also, no matter how organized you are at the beginning – things get pretty chaotic near the end. Emptying boxes to make room for more stuff, etc.

Sunday we woke up extremely sore. Most of the day was spent sleeping and eating breakfast at Portage Bay Café (we now live a block away). We were pretty much useless the rest of the day. We managed to do some much needed laundry and organize the living room.

Getting ready for work this morning was a little odd. It took Brian forever to find the box where he packed his shoes and another box where he packed his belts. Also taking a new bus is always a learning experience.

We hope to be all settled soon.

KEYS!!! KEYS!!! KEYS!!!

Our realtor just dropped off the keys to our condo about an hour ago. We were not scheduled to get the keys until Monday. So now we have an extra weekend to do some moving and stuff. Very exciting.

ROBOT boy for sale

I am trying to get rid of a few things to get rid of a few things to prepare for the move. Here is an item I put up on Craigslist as a joke.

ROBOT boy for sale $1000 Capitol Hill

I have no more room for Emiglio. He has been very good to me over the years... serving snacks and beverages, taking walks, going on roadtrips, hanging out at bars... he was even ringbearer at my wedding -- but now it is time to move on. I have replaced him with a Roomba vacum cleaner and the two do not get along! Emiglio is not in perfect condition... but that seems to add to his character. He was beaten once by an angry friend of mine because Emiglio had spilt his beverage. My friend punced his lights out? Literally...Now his red light is cracked... I need to move Emiglio out of his bedroom by the end of the month. If intrested please email through craigslist or call 206-xxx-xxxx. If Emiglio answers the phone, please don't tell him what you are calling about.

Update: Jesse took Emiglio off my hands and gave him to his younger brother for a birthday gift. I am not sure when I will receive my $1000 though...

Playing the Wii is good for you, however obtaining one may kill you!

Wii Sports experiment

A man loses weight by playing 30 minutes of Wii Sports everyday while maintaining all other normal activity and eating habits.

Woman dies of 'water intoxication' after radio contest

A preliminary autopsy states that a woman died of water intoxication following a water drinking contest for a Nintendo Wii. News10 in Sacramento reports Station 107.9 The End's "Hold your wee for a Wii" contest had contestants doing exactly what the title says. The winner was the person who didn't release their bladder the longest.

Snakes on a Boxcar

Today Bridget and I went down to the Boxcar in Magnolia where Tawnya, a friend of ours threw together a Snakes on a Plane screening for some of our friends and a few sad Seahawks fans (Seahawks lost the game to The Bears this morning, but Snakes on a Plane seemed to cheer everbody up). Tawnya came up with a creative drinking game. She took a list of the character sterotypes from the movie and put them in a hat. Everyone drew a sterotype from the hat and whenever the sterotype appeared in the movie, the person who drew the name was required to take a drink! Bridget and I were given "bad ass", which meant that everytime that Samel L. Jackson's character did something bad ass, we would take a drink. Of course everything Samuel L. Jackson does in that movie is bad ass, so basically we had to take a drink everytime he was on screen... luckily were were drinking Pabst.

Autographed copy of "Snakes on a Plane" on eBay

When Snakes On A Plane was finally released on DVD on January 2nd, some people from Bridget’s work rushed out and bought some copies since several of them are featured on the DVD special feature “Snakes On a Blog”. Bridget took home a few copies of the DVD for us to sign, the idea being that people will have a nice memento with the signatures of everyone involved in the whole Snakes on a Plane experience. However these mothaf$*%ing DVD’s are now showing up on ebay!

Here is the text from the auction:
“This DVD is signed by the creators and staff of the weblog www.snakesonstuff.com. The creators and staff are featured prominently in the special features section of the DVD. Interviews and after party footage providing piercing insight into the development of what became an internet sensation SnakesOnStuff.com. Where else can you see snakes on, well, stuff. If you can think of it they put a wiggly, poisonous, slimy critter on it. See Bridget, Brian, Mike, Silent Eric and Rick weave their way down the red carpet at the premiere, dance the night away at the after party and leave the door open to more slithering fun in the.... shall I say it, Snaquel. You will want to be the only one to own this one of a kind signed by the bloggers edition. Good bidding! Motherfing DVD shipped in a Motherfing snake free container! ..... maybe!”

Anyway I laughed very hard when I saw the auction this morning! I guess I should really update the site since there has been so much publicity about it lately...

Nabaztag the wifi bunny.

Here is an item I am certain my wife will be purchasing sometime before Easter. Upon first inspection the Nabaztag (I don’t even know how to go about pronouncing this) looks like a glorified Furby. However the Nabaztag does much more than just sit there. These bunnies are wifi enabled! Features include everything from communicating weather to reading your email. Apparently they can even smell….

Here is the part that my wife found adorable:
“The Nabaztag are wifi enabled bunnies, with delightful features like communication-by-ear. 'Marry' two rabbits and give one to your sweetie, anywhere else in the world (with a wifi connection). When you adjust your Nabaztag's ear, the married rabbit's will move to the same position.”

Check out the Nabaztag website for a fun little introduction.

PS3 Scalpers

When the PS3 launched last November, Ebay was flooded with sellers trying to make a quick profit. One of the requirements by Ebay was that sellers include a photo of the PS3 "in their possession" with their listings. Members of the site Cheap Ass Gamer started a thread called the "PS3 Ebay Scalpers Wall of Shame" which nicely assembles a collage of those "holiday opportunists". Some of the photos are hilarious. Sellers use tactics that include showing fast cars, children, or even showing some skin to sell the product!

As it turns out, the eBay market was flooded with PS3's. People tried to make a quick buck, but soon realized that the fruits of their efforts weren't looking so good as grey market prices began plummeting soon after the launch. Kotaku’s blog entry, "The Decline of the PS3 Grey Market" focuses on this story.

The IRS requires you to declare "Stolen Property" on your tax return

See Page 90 of publication 17 here (note: links a PDF file). Under the heading of 'other income' there is a section entitled 'stolen property'. It says: 'If you steal property, you must report its fair market value in your income in the year you steal it unless in that year you return it to its rightful owner!'

Well... I hope this means that I can also declare my new lock-picking tools as occupational expenses!

Tree Goats!

Goats can climb just about anything.... but these ones climb trees!

I am not surprised. Whenever I see mountain goats they are always standing on some tiny rock on the some steep hill that nobody could get to eating some random patch of grass or something. I always thought they were kind of showoffs!

I am always fascinated with how fast internet trends spread. Less that 24 hour after this guy posted the blog entry on Tree Goats, people found this link, forwarded it to friends, and now someone is selling Tree Goat t-shirts! By the time I buy my goat tree T-shirt and get it sent to me in the mail, tree Goats will have been so January 4th, 2007!

Update: More Goats in Trees pics can me found here.

What Does 200 Calories Look Like?

Some foods have significantly more calories than others but what does the difference actually look like? Each of the photographs found here represents 200 calories of the particular type of food; the images are sorted from low to high calorie density.

I guess we better start laying of the glasses of Canola oil and stick with the celery.

Celebrity patents

Recently Google introduced its new Patent Search feature, allowing users to dig through 7 million US patents from 1790 to mid-1996. Ironic Sans digs up several bizarre celebrity patents that have been issued over the years. Examples include the Michael Jackson's patent for anti gravity illusion and Eddie Van Halen's patent for Musical instrument support.

“Snakes on a Plane” released on DVD today

Since Bridget and I created a web site called Snakes on Stuff and helped generate buzz for the movie, we were invited to Los Angeles to see the world premiere in August. While in Los Angeles we were interviewed for a featurette called “Snakes on a Blog” that is included as a special feature on the DVD.

The featurette is good. There were 6 of us who went to the premiere that represented Snakes on Stuff (which I find absolutely hilarious). We all get quite a bit of camera time. I was afraid we would look stupid, but it is put together very well.

2007 is the year of the Blog!

Welcome to our blog! Since everyone and there pet has blog these days, we figured we would start one.

We also have a Flickr page where you will be able to find many of our photos.

Enjoy!
